This is one hot topic, literally. I hear comments (good & bad) all the time, whether it be from people who don’t take hot yoga and are questioning if I should be in the hot room or from people in my yoga community that are just curious about how the yoga is helping my pregnancy.
Just a little back story, I’ve been practicing hot yoga (the 26 & 2 series to be exact) on and off since 2008 but regularly (5-6xs a week) since 2015. That’s a whole lot of yoga.
However, when I started working with a fertility clinic and things got more intense with our treatment I was advised to step out of the hot room. So I followed their advise.
Once I did get pregnant I stayed out till 12 weeks, per the advise of my OB. I absolutely love my doctor, she has actually practiced the 26 and 2 series, so she knew exactly what I would be doing. I’ve noticed that many people with negative opinions about practicing hot yoga while pregnant often have never even taken a class before. Basically, it’s like taking parenting advise from a non parent, the advise isn’t appreciated or wanted.
My first class back in 5 months was a complete struggle. I was so nervous to be in hot room, the whole class I was questioning if I was doing the right thing. But I stuck to 2/3 classes a week, following the pregnancy modifications, and slowly my practice and energy came back. I can’t express how much better I feel, mentally and physically. My joints feel more mobile and my headspace is clear. I’m overall just a happier person.
The number one thing you need to worry about, besides taking it easy, when taking hot yoga while pregnant is WATER. I have been drinking anywhere between a gallon and a gallon and a half of water every day, depending on how many classes I’m teaching or taking. And every time I drink water it has some form of electrolytes. Here is what I’ve been using for years. ( I love to add juices from one lemon or lime to my drink, it’s SO good!)
